- 得高分的学生可以免期终考。 Students who get very high marks will be exempt from the final examination.

free of,也指豁免,但应用面没有exempt大,一般只限于豁免费用,如free of charge (cost, lent)等。

avoid, avoidable, unavoidable, 指可以(不可)避免。
- 免受影响是不可能的。 It is impossible to avoid being affected.
- 他过去一贯瞧不起我们,他这种人我们免见。 He used to look down upon us. We should avoid seeing him.
- 这样的缺点是难免的。 Such shortcomings are hardly avoidable.
