put off,口头用语,不带任何感情色彩,可指任何意义的推迟。可以是有意推迟,也可以是无意中的推迟;可以是有确定时间的推迟,也可以是无确定时间的推迟。
- 我们已决定把会议推迟到下个星期天。 We've decided to put off the meeting until next Sunday.
- 他因病不得不推迟跟我的约会。 He had to put off an appointment with me on account of illness.
- 我们的野餐因为天气不好而推迟了。 We put off the picnic because of bad weather.
postpone,推迟的正式用语,故推迟的时间往往是确定的。
- 我们把音乐会推迟到了总统就职日之后。 We postponed our concert until after the President's Inaugural Day.
- 比赛本来定在今天,但已往后推迟一星期。 The game was fixed for today but it has been postponed for a week.
defer,指有意推迟。
