后汉光武帝刘秀下命令给岑彭:
- ‘人苦不知足,既平陇,复望蜀。’教他平定陇右(今甘肃一带)以后领兵南下,攻取西蜀(见于《后汉书·岑彭传》)。后来用‘得陇望蜀’比喻贪得无厌。 {According to History of Later Han·Biographyof Cen Peng, Liu Xiu, or Emperor Guangwu, issued the order to Cen Peng:
‘It is human nature not to be content with what we have; having captured Long we now have our eye on Shu.’ The message here is that the general, after he took Longyou (around present-day Gansu), should lead his troops southward to attack Xishu. Later, people use the expression to refer to ‘insatiable desires'.}
